STATEMENT
It starts with a shim. An ordinary object, seemingly without value, that is not autonomous. It exists in relation to something else. An object that necessity puts to work in service of another. A temporary element that supports. That holds. It holds open. Or keeps closed. It holds for a while. Or longer. It makes things possible. It compensates. It keeps something from falling. It gives time.
It can be folded cardboard tucked under a table leg, a piece of wood not good enough for anything else, a hook, a piece of rope, a stone. It is the heel of a shoe, a booster seat, a sandbag. It lifts, reveals, protects.
Then the support is no longer necessary. It shifts. It changes. The support is now something else. It comes from elsewhere. Sometimes it is visible. Sometimes it is not.
We still hold, just not in the same way.
I think about all the structures that allow us to hold. All the forms of support. Those we build in architecture, but also those that shape us through our relationships, our environments, our communities. We hold through what supports us. And sometimes through what we become capable of supporting in turn.
Who. What. Why. How do we hold?
Alone, and together. That is what I think about.
